The Trotsky Wednesday September 29th @ 7 PM Director: Jacob Tierney Runtime: 120 minutes Language: English Rating: N/R Jacob Tierney’s hilarious The Trotsky follows Leon Bronstein (Jay Baruchel), a precocious teen who fervently believes himself to be the reincarnation of fabled Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky. Leon’s obsession with his namesake extends far beyond wearing the revolutionary’s trademark wire-rimmed spectacles and ill-fitting suits. He’s determined to duplicate every aspect of Trotsky’s life, including being exiled and, ultimately, assassinated One of the most appealing aspects of The Trotsky is that it is unreservedly Canadian and packed with slyly funny cultural references, ranging from gags about the French-English divide in Montreal to Ben Mulroney’s ancestry. The film also asks serious questions about the generational divide and how committed we are to our ideals. In The Trotsky laughter itself is revolutionary and the film inspires laughter in no short supply. The Secret in Their Eyes/ El secreto de sus ojos Wednesday October 27th @ 7 PM Director: Juan José Campanula Runtime: 127 minutes Language: Spanish with English subtitles Rating: N/R Set in director Juan José Campanula’s native Argentina The Secret in Their Eyes is a suspenseful crime drama with a love story at its core. Newly retired from his career in Argentina's criminal court, Benjamín Espósito (Ricardo Darín) begins writing a novel about an unsettled case from his past that continues to haunt him. In 1974, a beautiful young newlywed was raped and murdered and Espósito and his colleague, the brilliant but unreliable alcoholic Pablo Sandoval (Guillermo Francella, were sent to investigate the horrifying crime. Despite their dedication, however, inept officials and politics both internal and external to the court threaten to let justice slip away. Espósito's story unfolds with gripping tension as the film shifts smoothly between time periods. Searching for an ending to his book, the older would-be writer makes a startling discovery that compels him to redeem his past and seize his future.
