Novel Sets for Children and Teens (February 2010)

The McLaughlin Branch Children’s and Youth Services department now has sets of novels which may be borrowed by book clubs or for classroom study.

Novels sets are checked out for the regular three week loan period and may be renewed. You may also ask for an extended loan period of six weeks.

Battle of the Books

Parents, teachers and teacher librarians: join your student teams in the Battle of the Books. Participants will enjoy great reading, while competing against other young readers to show that their readers are leaders when it comes to enjoying the best books around.

Story Boxes

Story boxes are intended for use by adult staff in a learning environment with a group of up to twenty children from birth to 6 years.

Each story box contains 10 picture books and a list of 10 more, lots of information books, 10 rhymes and fingerplays, a CD with at least one theme-related song, a craft sample with instructions, hands-on items, and extension activities that invite further exploration of the theme.

The themes are:

Story boxes are available for pick-up at McLaughlin Children’s Services. They may be borrowed for three weeks. You may have one story box checked out at a time.

It is recommended that story boxes be borrowed by holders of Organizational memberships at OPL. There is no charge; an application form must be completed and signed by a person authorized to accept responsibility for materials borrowed.

Story boxes contain many items. We ask for your care and attention to ensure everything comes back together and in good shape for the next users.

Books for Babies

The Library has a gift for the new baby in your family. The Books for Babies kit contains information about programmes for you and baby, a booklet of first rhymes, a new board book, and a nightlight. Library use begins at birth! Come in and sign up your new little one for a membership to-day.

School and Group Visits to the Library

Book your classes now for guided tours, story times, and library orientation sessions with library staff. Your students may apply for library cards, borrow books, listen to book talks and stories, develop their research skills, and learn how to use the library’s computer catalogue. We look forward to sharing the Library with you and your class. Please note that a minimum of two weeks notice is required to book a class visit.

Library Books in Your Classroom
Teachers and school librarians are invited to check out a deposit of books for the classroom or daycare centre. Picture books, novel sets, non-fiction to enrich your students’ investigation of a topic are all available. Two weeks notice is required if you wish staff to put together materials on a specific theme or subject.
