InterLibrary Loan Services

Request an interlibrary loan

If the library does not have the item you are looking for, interlibrary loans can be arranged through any branch of the Oshawa Public Libraries.

Ordering

To order a book, you will need to tell us the title and author, as well as any other information you might have such as publisher or ISBN. For a magazine, we will need to know the title, issue number and date issued. For a photocopy of an article, we will need the same information as for a magazine as well as the title and author of the article and the pages where the article appears. It may also be difficult to obtain videos, DVDs, music items and books-on-CD as some libraries are unwilling to lend these items.

Waiting time for interlibrary loan requests is typically 4 to 6 weeks, although some requests could take several months depending on the rarity or popularity of the item.

We cannot order new books (published within the past year) since they will be in use by the owning library’s customers.

Suggestions for additions to our collection can be made through the question/comment form.

To process your request, your library card must be in good standing (i.e. not on "hold" for outstanding charges, not expired, etc).

Fill out an Online Interlibrary Loan Form.

Request cards are also available at all branches of the Oshawa Public Libraries.

Unless otherwise noted on your request, circulating items will be held for pickup at your default branch. You can check with staff for your designated branch.

Pick up and returns

Please make sure that the book is returned with the paperwork attached – the attached barcode is needed to clear the item from your record to avoid overdue charges.
Interlibrary loan materials are picked up with the Reserve Books and returned to the Circulation Book Return. Do not return interlibrary loan books in the outside Book Drop.

Renewals

All requests for renewals should be made to the interlibrary loan staff at least three days prior to the item's due date. Please check the interlibrary loan slip to make sure the item can be renewed before requesting an extension. Items can be renewed for an additional three weeks from the renewal date if it is approved by the owning library.

Overdue fines

Fines will be charged on all overdue interlibrary loan materials in accordance with Oshawa Public Libraries policies. Please be sure to check the due date on the ILL slip attached to the front cover. Renewable items carry a fine of $1.00 per day, while Non-Renewable items are $2.00 per day, both with a $20.00 maximum per item. These fines are in addition to fines levied for other Oshawa Public Libraries materials.
If you have any questions, please call Interlibrary Loans Services at 905-579-6111, ext.5235.
